“Damals” – Erinnerungen an grosse Tage der SS-Totenkopf-Division im Französischen Feldzug 1940 – Original Wartime Photo Book

Original wartime photographic commemorative book titled “Damals – Erinnerungen an grosse Tage der SS-Totenkopf-Division im Französischen Feldzug 1940”, published by Chr. Belser Verlag, Stuttgart.

This large-format period publication documents the campaign of the SS-Totenkopf-Division during the 1940 French campaign and contains numerous wartime photographs, battle imagery, and propaganda-style presentation material from the early years of the war.

The book retains its original illustrated cover featuring a German soldier standing atop an armored vehicle marked “Orléans.” Interior title pages remain clean and attractive, showing the distinctive period typography and divisional references.

Condition is overall good considering age, with visible period wear, edge wear, creasing, and some damage to the outer cover and spine area. Interior pages remain well preserved and display very nicely. The cover is damaged (little side missing) and reverse is loose!

An increasingly difficult-to-find original wartime divisional publication with strong historical and display appeal.

Historical Description

The SS-Totenkopf-Division was formed in 1939 largely from personnel associated with the SS-Totenkopfverbände and participated in the German campaign in France in 1940. Wartime books such as Damals were produced as commemorative and propagandistic publications intended to document campaigns and preserve the experiences of participating soldiers through photography and narrative presentation.

Publications of this type became popular during the war years and today remain sought after as historical reference and display pieces due to their period photography, wartime printing style, and divisional association.
