Rare WWII RAF Tunic to Belgian DFC Recipient Vicky Ortmans – Pilot Wings, Austin Reed, Dated 1940

Exceptional and rare original WWII Royal Air Force officer’s service dress tunic, attributed to Belgian RAF pilot and Distinguished Flying Cross recipient Vicky Ortmans. A highly desirable and historically significant attributed RAF uniform.

This beautiful wartime RAF officer’s tunic is a privately tailored example by the renowned London tailor Austin Reed, Regent Street, one of the best-known military outfitters of the period. The interior tailor label is clearly named to Ortmans (with his matching service number) and dated October 1940, giving this piece exceptional provenance and early-war dating.

Constructed in classic RAF blue-grey wool, the tunic retains its original brass RAF buttons and presents beautifully on display. The chest is fitted with an original RAF pilot’s brevet (“wings”), alongside ribbon bars (DFC & Germany Star) indicating wartime service.

Notable features include:

  • Original RAF officer’s service dress tunic
  • Named tailor label: Ortmans
  • Tailored by Austin Reed, Regent Street, London
  • Clearly dated 10/1940
  • Original RAF pilot brevet
  • Original ribbon bars present
  • Original brass RAF buttons throughout
  • Beautiful tailored officer-quality construction
  • Rare attributed example to a Belgian serving with the RAF during WWII
  • Recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC)

The tunic shows honest period wear consistent with age and wartime use, including light service wear and a small moth nip/period wear area as shown in the photos. Overall, it remains in very strong displayable condition with excellent eye appeal.

Named and attributable RAF uniforms to foreign volunteer airmen are highly sought after, especially to Belgian personnel who served during the difficult early years of the war following the German invasion of Belgium.

An exceptional and rare attributed RAF display piece that would fit perfectly in any advanced WWII aviation, RAF, or Belgian military collection. Story of Provenance: Came from a Airforce soldier which collected militaria, apparently he received it from a relative of Ortmans.
