Exceptional Belgian WWI Grenadier (Linieregiment) Model 1918 Tunic – 8 Service Stripes, Rare M18 Pattern
Exceptional and rare original Belgian First World War Model 1918 Grenadier tunic. An outstanding and highly desirable example of one of the rarest Belgian wartime uniform patterns.
This original Belgian Model 1918 tunic (veste vareuse M18) represents the final wartime evolution of the Belgian Army uniform during the Great War. Introduced late in the war, the M18 pattern clearly shows strong influence from the American uniform. A particularly fascinating feature is the presence of an internal manufacturer’s label from Alfred Benjamin & Washington Uniform Co. Inc., marked Size 40, with contract information and dated 3 Augst 1918. This strongly supports documented American involvement in late-war Belgian military supply and further confirms the direct US influence on the Model 1918 pattern.
A particularly desirable feature is the presence of eight front service stripes, indicating four years of military service, a wonderful detail directly reflecting prolonged wartime service.
Condition is exceptionally strong overall for a Belgian WWI uniform. The exterior wool remains remarkably well preserved with strong color and crisp structure. The interior lining shows expected period wear and age, including some moth and fabric damage, as shown in the photographs. These imperfections are entirely consistent with age and do not detract from the rarity or display quality of the piece.
Belgian WWI uniforms—especially original Model 1918 examples—are rarely encountered on today’s market. Surviving examples in this level of completeness and preservation are exceptionally difficult to upgrade. An exceptional and scarce Belgian Great War tunic!
