War Merit Cross 2nd Class – 1939 – Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse

€30,00

An original German War Merit Cross 2nd Class without Swords (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1939, 2. Klasse ohne Schwerter), instituted on 18 October 1939.

The cross features the characteristic textured arms with raised borders and a central circular medallion bearing a swastika within a decorative wreath. The reverse displays the date “1939” in raised numerals.

Unlike the combat-related version, this example has no crossed swords between the arms of the cross. It retains its suspension ring and black, white and red ribbon.

Historical Background

The War Merit Cross recognised contributions to the German war effort that did not necessarily qualify for the Iron Cross. The version without swords was principally associated with civilian merit and non-combat contributions, including work in industry, administration and wartime support services. The decoration was awarded to both civilians and military personnel for qualifying non-combat service.

Condition

The cross displays an aged bronze-coloured finish with natural patina, minor surface wear and some discolouration. The raised details and date remain clearly defined. The suspension ring and ribbon are present. Please examine the photographs carefully for the precise condition.
