An interesting original wartime portrait photograph of Herbert Pink, who – according to research – belonged to U-Boot “U-527“.
U-527 was a German Type IXC/40 submarine commissioned on 2 September 1942 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Herbert Uhlig. It served with the 10. U-Flottille from Lorient and completed two operational patrols in the Atlantic. On 23 July 1943, U-527 was sunk south of the Azores by depth charges dropped by an Avenger aircraft from the American escort carrier USS Bogue. Forty crew members were lost, while thirteen survived.
A poignant and historically interesting photograph connected to the fate of U-527 and its crew.
