Original First World War Besitzzeugnis für das Verwundetenabzeichen (Wound Badge Certificate), issued by Bezirkskommando I Berlin.

The certificate was awarded to a former serviceman from Landwehrbezirk I Berlin, born on 24. April 1893 in Berlin.

Of particular interest is the wording explaining the basis of the award. Under the Allerhöchste Kabinetts-Ordre vom 3. März 1918, the recipient was awarded the Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarzem Eisen (Wound Badge in Black Iron) due to a health injury sustained in the field (im Felde erlittene Gesundheitsbeschädigung), which had resulted in his discharge from active military service.

Dated Berlin-Schöneberg, 19. August 1918, and bearing the signature of the Oberst und Kommandeur of Bezirkskommando I Berlin.

An interesting example of the Imperial German wound-award system, particularly because the certificate documents not simply a wound, but a service-related health injury serious enough to result in the soldier’s release from military service.

Condition

Good overall presentation, with age toning, a pronounced vertical centre fold, several creases and minor handling marks. The printed text and handwritten entries remain visible.
