Knight’s Cross: “During the 389. Infanterie-Division’s fierce defensive battles in the Tucheler Moor the enemy launched attacks with the ultimate aim of taking Danzig, an act which would cut off the German resupply and prevent the evacuation of the German civilian population. In this context Hauptmann Ender and his II./Grenadier-Regiment 545 were ordered to defend the Frankenhagen sector (10 km NW of Tuchel), one of the hotspots of the fighting. On the 10.02.1945, following a one hour artillery barrage, the enemy attacked the Bataillon’s flank with strong infantry forces and 18 tanks. Their goal was to tear a hole in our defensive positions and roll them up. This created a dangerous situation for the entire divisional sector. In response the Bataillon commander placed himself at the head of the last reserve forces and succeeded in separating the enemy infantry from their tanks. He and his men were able to destroy 15 tanks, 4 anti-tank guns (7.62 cm) and 5 assault guns in close combat via Panzerfausts. The position was ultimately held by its hard-pressed garrison. Over the course of this 10 hour long defensive battle our own artillery only played a minor support role, meaning that the actual combat was almost exclusively at close range.”

Awarded the Ritterkreuz for:
1. Forming an emergency Flak front in response to British armoured counterattacks on the second day of the Battle of Gazala, the 27.05.1942. This Flak front destroyed 24 of the attacking British Grant tanks and helped save the bulk of the Afrika Korps from a critical situation.
2. The successful handling of his Kampfgruppe in the heavy fighting near El Hamma on the 27.03.1943, where it allegedly destroyed 30 US tanks.
3. Covering the retreat of the 15. Panzer-Division and the 164. Leichte-Division at El Agareb on the 09.04.1943. His Flak guns destroyed 7 tanks on this day and forced the rest of the attacking force (comprising about 50 tanks) to retreat.

Knight’s Cross: “On the 17.01.1945 the Soviets succeeded in penetrating through the German Wkra Position in the Nasielsk area, specifically between the 542. Volksgrenadier-Division and 5. SS-Panzer-Division “Wiking”. In response Major Kopp (the commander of Volksgrenadier-Regiment 1077) decided to entrust the task of throwing back the enemy here to Leutnant Banaski and his reinforced Pionier Zug, which was the regimental reserve. Leutnant Banaski commenced his countermoves with all the forces he had at his disposal, namely his Pionier Zug, the remnants of I. Bataillon, all available staff soldiers and an operational Sturmgeschütz Kompanie (all totalling some 250 men). He and his men succeeded in sealing off the penetration in close combat and encircling some of the attacking Soviet forces. Banaski and his Kampfgruppe captured 200 Soviet prisoners as well as a number of tanks and mortars. This brought the Soviet attack to a halt, and the Division was given the opportunity to withdraw to a fall-back position in an orderly manner. Banaski’s actions furthermore permitted the escape of a German field hospital as well as thousands of refugees.” (Source: Traces of War)

Awarded for his actions during the Battle of Crete. As all the officers of the I./Fallschirmjäger-Sturm-Regiment 1 had fallen, Neumann took over the leadership of the rest of the Bataillon. Oberleutnant Trebes, commanding the remnants of the Stoßgruppe Braun, also attached himself to Neumann’s group. Acting on his own initiative, Dr. Neumann decided to capture the NW part of Hill 107 and eliminate the Allied AA guns there that commanded the Maleme airfield. In this he was successful, with this action being the turning point of the whole battle. After returning to his nominal duties, he was then ordered by the newly arrived Oberst Ramcke to take over the Bataillon once again. Thus, on the morning of 22.05.1941, Neumann divided the Bataillon into 2 Kompanien. The next day Neumann and his men took the role of Vorausabteilung, and advanced ahead of the left wing of the II. Bataillon towards the east. At 17:00 he reached the village of Modea. The next day, while on the hill south of Platania, the Bataillon halted as the attack had been postponed. Finally, on the 24.05.1941, Oberleutnant Stolz took over the leadership of the Bataillon and Neumann could finally return to looking after the many wounded for good. In this capacity he also distinguished himself outstandingly.
