“Oberstleutnant Audorff has already served as an outstanding troop leader in the western campaign. In this capacity he distinguished himself in such a way that he was assigned the post of regimental commander while only a Major. Assigned the task of organizing the formation of Grenadier-Regiment 754 in November 1942, he was able to forge this unit into an effective instrument of war within a very short time. As such it was able to be employed with great success on the Tunisian front as early as December of the same year. On the 25.04.1943 the English launched an offensive near Medjez el Bab that had the ultimate aim of breaking through to Tunis. On this day Oberstleutnant Audorff personally directed his defense from the foremost line, and he managed to pull off a successful resistance against an English infantry division reinforced by a tank brigade. The main line of defense therefore remained completely in our hands by the evening of this day. Throughout this time he personally intervened everywhere despite strong enemy artillery and airstrikes. He conducted all the necessary counterthrusts/counterattacks and was the soul of the defensive will. His Regiment was accordingly named in the OKW-Bericht for having the lion’s share of this defensive success. However the prevention of an enemy breakthrough to Tunis on this day is ultimately the personal achievement of Oberstleutnant Audorff, commander of the Grenadier-Regiment 754. Eichenlaub: Awarded for his further achievements during the battle for the Cherkassy pocket. Especially during the breakout from the pocket he would show great bravery and energy. He collected a Bataillon of stragglers from the Korpsabteilung B and the 5. SS Panzer-Division “Wiking” and broke through a Soviet armoured group south of the road Potschapinzy-Lissjanka. With his horse Lieb then swam over the Gniloi-Tikitsch and reached safety at Lissjanka. For his role in this battle he would be christened the “Lion of Cherkassy” and be awarded the Oakleaves directly from Hitler himself.

Eichenlaub: Awarded for his successful command of the 14. Infanterie-Division during the five-day long battle west, NW and NE of Ostrolenka, which saw repeated Soviet onslaughts defeated with the result that the attempted breakthrough could be prevented. Vital for the German success here was the leadership of Schneider himself. In every difficult moment he was to be found right at the front despite heavy Soviet fire, and was thus able to make his decisions based on a clear understanding of the situation as well as provide an inspiring example to his troops.

Following Heeresgruppe Mitte’s collapse during Operation Bagration, Oberst Bleckwenn and a small Kampfgruppe under his command managed to break through to East Prussia after a period of 44 days of fighting through Belorussian forests. In the process he and his men overcame the torrential currents of the Memel river on the night of the 04./05.08.1944 while crossing it at a point south of Druschkiniki. He was subsequently awarded the Oakleaves for this noteworthy accomplishment.

During the withdrawal of the 9. Panzer-Division across the Rhine in late February 1945, the handful of battle ready elements of the Division were tasked with covering the retreat. One of these, formed on 25.02.1945, was led by Leutnant Püttcher. Despite only having two 8.8 cm Flak guns as heavy weapons, Püttcher and his small Kampfgruppe were able to hold their assigned sector Glesch—Sinsteden against all opposing attacks even though the Allies had broken through on the left and right. Even after they had been surrounded and had no radio contact with the higher commands, Leutnant Püttcher refused to surrender to the Allies.
