During World War II he became the Commander of the II. Bataillon/ 27. Waffen-Gebirgsjäger-Regiment of the 13. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS „Handschar“ (1st Croatian) and was awarded the Knight’s Cross near the end of the war in May 1945.
