Crimea Shield (Krimschild), 1941–1942 – Zinc with Field-Grey Wool Backing

€180,00

An example of the German Crimea Campaign Shield (Krimschild), instituted on 25 July 1942 to recognise participation in the Crimean campaign during the Second World War.

The shield features a German eagle with outstretched wings above the dates 1941–1942, with a map of the Crimean region and the inscription KRIM below. It is constructed from zinc, with a field-grey wool backing intended for attachment to the uniform sleeve.

The shield retains its distinctive design and raised details. The reverse is covered by a shaped paper backing, with the edges of the backing material showing age-related deterioration.

Historical Background

The Crimea Shield was awarded to eligible German and allied military personnel who participated in the campaign in Crimea between 21 September 1941 and 4 July 1942. The campaign included the fighting across the peninsula and the capture of Sevastopol. The shield was normally worn on the left upper sleeve of the uniform, sewn onto its cloth backing. Different backing colours were used for different branches of service.

Condition

The shield displays age-related wear and surface discolouration. The zinc face retains clearly visible relief details, although the original finish appears worn. The field-grey wool backing is present, while the reverse paper covering shows significant cracking, tears and losses around the edges. Please consult all photographs for the exact condition. Priced accordingly!
