The Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) was a state-controlled labor organization in Nazi Germany, tasked with providing pre-military training, labor deployment, and infrastructure work. Service in the RAD became effectively compulsory for young men and later women, forming an integral part of the regime’s social and military preparation system.

The Dienstauszeichnung für den Reichsarbeitsdienst was instituted to recognize long and faithful service within the organization. The 4th Class typically denoted a defined period of service and was awarded to personnel who had demonstrated sustained commitment within RAD administrative or operational roles.

Arbeitsgaue were regional administrative districts, and Arbeitsgauleitung VII in Kiel oversaw RAD activities in northern Germany. Officials such as a Stabsamtwalter held administrative responsibilities within this structure, contributing to the coordination and management of labor and organizational functions.

Today, RAD award documents are valued as primary-source material reflecting the bureaucratic and social framework of the regime, as well as the role of structured labor service in the broader wartime system.
