DRK Verwendungsbuch & Ausweis – Reserve-Lazarett Hamm – X-Ray Assistant & Laboratory (!)
An original and well-documented Verwendungsbuch (Service Book) together with the matching Ausweis (Identification Card) issued to Else Küster (née Nordhoff), who served with the Freiwillige Krankenpflege (Voluntary Nursing Service) attached to the German military medical service during the Second World War.
The grouping includes the blue service booklet with its original portrait photograph, numerous official stamps, medical entries, and the matching identification card issued for service at the Reserve-Lazarett Hamm (Westfalen). The identification card still retains its original photograph and quarterly validation stamps.
Else Küster, born 2 October 1917, was employed as a medizinisch-technische Assistentin (medical technical assistant) and later worked as an X-ray assistant, occasionally also serving as a laboratory assistant. The booklet records her entering service on 1 April 1942, remaining attached to the Reserve Hospital in Hamm until 15 November 1945.
The service record contains numerous medical examinations, vaccination records, X-ray findings, official Wehrkreis VI stamps, and detailed service entries documenting more than three years of continuous wartime hospital service.
A scarce and highly attractive original document grouping relating to the German wartime medical services. Front of the Verwendungsbuch was censored with inkt.

Historical Description
The Freiwillige Krankenpflege (Voluntary Nursing Service) formed an essential component of Germany’s wartime medical system. Although many members were associated with the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross), the organization operated under the authority of the Commissioner for Voluntary Nursing Service, supporting both military and reserve hospitals throughout the Reich.
Members included qualified nurses, laboratory assistants, X-ray technicians, medical technical assistants, and other trained medical personnel. They staffed military hospitals, reserve hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and convalescent centers treating wounded soldiers returning from the front.
Each member received a Verwendungsbuch, an official service record documenting identity, qualifications, vaccinations, medical examinations, postings, promotions, and discharge. Together with the accompanying Ausweis, these documents served as proof of employment and authorization to enter military medical installations.
