WIA 29 November, 1943 by “4 mots” return fire near Delmenhorst; bailed safely. An Operation Bodenplatte pilot, he was one of few successful; his eighth known victory this date, 1 January, 1945, a Spitfire in the Ghent area. His 1st victory, as an Ofhr, a B-17 (HSS) on 22 June, 1943. His 2nd, a B-17 (HSS) on 17 August, 1943. His “White 10” overturned on landing at Ödheim after this engagement, pilot safe. His 3rd, a B-17 on 11 January, 1944. His 4th, a B-17 (HSS) on 24 January, 1944. His 5th, a B-17 10 km S of Chimay on 8 February, 1944. Shot down over France in Feb. 1944. His 6th, a B-17 on 6 March, 1944, no location. His 7th, a B-17 N of Kaiserlautern on 24 April, 1944. He witnessed the death of his good friend, Johannes Rathenow, being just to his left when Rathenows AC exploded on 3 November, 1943. Berger flew the He 162 in 2/JG-1 in March and April 1945.
