“Kapitänleutnant Hermann Büchting has distinguished himself as the commander of an S-Boat over the course of over 90 sorties in the English Channel, Gulf of Finland and Black Sea. In this time he sunk a total of 8 enemy merchant ships with 30200 GRT (some from heavily escorted convoys) and torpedoed a further steamer. With the support of other ships he sunk a torpedo boat, a minesweeper and two submarine chasers, and he also captured a Soviet passenger ship. Furthermore he also conducted numerous successful mine operations. Kapitänleutnant Büchting is a superb commander who has led his ship and its crew against the enemy with unfailing toughness and outstanding courage.”
