Kriegsmarine Seefunkzeugnis – Marine-Wehrfunk, 1942

Original German Kriegsmarine Seefunkzeugnis issued by the Höherer Kommandeur der Marinenachrichtenschulen to Josef Herbst, born 14 October 1925 in Beuthen, a member of the Marine-Wehrfunk. The certificate is numbered 3698/K and was issued at Flensburg-Mürwik on 15 December 1942. It records that Herbst fulfilled the requirements for the Seefunkzeugnis according to the Marine examination regulations on 9 December 1942.

The certificate granted Herbst an important career qualification: upon satisfying the other conditions for entry, he was entitled to be preferentially accepted into the Funklaufbahn der Kriegsmarine, the radio/communications career of the German Navy. This makes the document considerably more than a routine service paper; it documents the successful completion of specialist communications training by a very young Kriegsmarine serviceman, only 17 years old at the time of qualification.

The document was issued by the Höherer Kommandeur der Marinenachrichtenschulen, the Kriegsmarine command responsible for the Navy’s specialist communications schools. This command was established in April 1941, replacing the former Marine-Nachrichten-Inspektion, and controlled specialist schools including the Marine-Nachrichtenschule Mürwik, Marine-Nachrichtenschule Aurich and Marine-Nachrichtenschule Waren, as well as the Navy’s radio-measurement training establishments. At the time of this certificate, the command was headed by Kapitän zur See Peter-Christian Magnussen, who held the position from 1941 until June 1943. The period and position therefore fit the certificate’s 15 December 1942 date.

Particularly appealing is the connection with Flensburg-Mürwik, one of the principal centres of Kriegsmarine communications training. The elaborate printed design, featuring the naval eagle, radio masts and maritime scene, makes this an attractive and distinctive example of Kriegsmarine specialist-training documentation. It provides a named record of a young man’s successful qualification for the Navy’s radio service during the middle period of the Second World War.

Condition

Original wartime document with multiple horizontal and vertical folds, light age-related toning and discoloration, handling/storage wear and some minor edge wear. Despite these imperfections, the impressive printed design, handwritten entries, official stamp and original signature remain clearly visible.
