Historical Description
The Soldbuch served as the primary identity and pay document carried by German Wehrmacht personnel during the Second World War. Unlike the Wehrpass, the Soldbuch accompanied the serviceman throughout his military service and documented transfers, equipment, medical treatment, leave periods, promotions and decorations.
This example belonged to Oberbootsmann Georg Rohwer, whose wartime career included service in several Marine-Flak-Abteilungen before later assignment to the Netzsperrflottille Nord.
The Netzsperrflottille Nord was established in August 1940 from the earlier Netzsperrgruppe Nord and headquartered in Trondheim, Norway. The flotilla operated under the Kommandierender Admiral Norwegen and was responsible for maintaining defensive naval barriers, anti-submarine nets and coastal protection systems along occupied Norway’s strategically important coastline.
The flotilla’s operational sectors stretched from Kirkenes in the far north down to the Oslofjord, protecting harbors, fjords and naval installations against Allied naval and submarine attacks. The flotilla was divided into five operational groups:
- Gruppe 1 – Kirkenes
- Gruppe 2 – Narvik
- Gruppe 3 – Trondheim
- Gruppe 4 – Bergen
- Gruppe 5 – Drammen
Rohwer’s award combination is especially interesting. The Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz confirms he was wounded during service, while the Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse indicates recognized bravery or distinguished combat performance. The Minensucher-Abzeichen further reflects operational naval service connected to mine warfare, convoy protection or naval barrier duties.
Extensively filled Kriegsmarine Soldbücher with combat awards, multiple unit transfers and documented Norway occupation service are increasingly sought after due to the amount of historical research potential and the insight they provide into Kriegsmarine coastal warfare operations during World War II.
