KVK2X Award Doc – Kraftfahr-Abteilung 563, Italy (10. Armee) – (von Vietinghoff Variant)
Original German award certificate (Besitzzeugnis/Urkunde) for the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern (War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords), awarded to Gefreiter Otto Ostermann, serving with 2./Kraftfahr-Abteilung 563. The certificate is dated A.H.Qu., 1 September 1944 and was issued under the authority of the Oberbefehlshaber der 10. Armee, Generaloberst Heinrich von Vietinghoff. It bears the original 10. Armee Dienstsiegel and the handwritten certification signature of an Oberst und 1. Adjutant.
The unit association is particularly interesting. Kraftfahr-Abteilung 563 was a German Army motor transport formation, originally formed from the Nachschub-Kolonnen-Abteilung 563 and later redesignated as a Kraftfahr-Abteilung. The unit had served on the Eastern Front from 1941 and, from 1944, operated in Italy, making this a particularly interesting late-war document for a motor transport soldier serving in the Italian theatre.
The 1 September 1944 date is especially significant. At this point the 10. Armee was conducting defensive operations in Italy as Allied forces continued their advance northward. Generaloberst Heinrich von Vietinghoff was commanding the 10. Armee during this period, and his name is printed directly on the certificate. The award was therefore issued at a senior army-command level rather than merely at regimental level, giving the document an attractive 10. Armee / Vietinghoff association.
The recipient’s service with a Kraftfahr-Abteilung also provides an interesting insight into the often-overlooked logistical side of the Italian campaign. These motor transport formations were responsible for moving fuel, ammunition, supplies and other essential matériel, operating under increasingly difficult conditions as the German forces conducted their fighting withdrawal through Italy.
Condition
Original wartime document with a horizontal fold, light age-related toning and minor handling/storage wear. The paper has some light discoloration and edge wear, but the printed text remains very clear. The original 10. Armee Dienstsiegel, printed von Vietinghoff authorization and handwritten certification signature are all well preserved.
