The Luftschutz-Ehrenzeichen was instituted in 1938 to recognize distinguished service within Germany’s air raid protection organizations.
The 2nd Class award was presented to:
- Members of the Luftschutz
- Air raid wardens
- Civil defense personnel
- Individuals contributing to homeland air protection efforts
Recipients were honored for long and faithful service, merit, or exceptional commitment in protecting the civilian population during the growing threat of aerial warfare.
As the war progressed, aluminium and zinc examples became increasingly common due to wartime material shortages.
