Historical Description

The Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter (Cross of Honour of the German Mother) was instituted by Adolf Hitler in 1938 to recognize German mothers with large families.

The decoration was awarded in three grades:

  • Bronze: 4–5 children
  • Silver: 6–7 children
  • Gold: 8 or more children

The award formed part of the regime’s broader demographic and social policies during the Third Reich period and was presented ceremonially on significant national dates, most notably Mother’s Day.

The Gold grade is considerably scarcer than bronze and silver examples and remains a sought-after decoration among collectors of German WWII awards and social history items.
