Exceptional and historically rich late-war document grouping belonging to Gefreiter Paul Fromme, serving with 2. Batterie/ Panzer-Artillerie-Regiment 93 of the famed 26. Panzer-Division.

This highly attractive set includes:

  • Award document for the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern dated 30.1.1945
  • Official award certificate for wear of the 26. Panzer-Division Traditionsabzeichen dated 24.12.1944 signed by the Abteilungskommandeur
  • Document that he is allowed to wear it
  • Matching division insignia / sleeve patches
  • Accompanying official typed correspondence
  • Period handwritten note/card included in the lot

The documents remain in solid original condition with honest age wear, folds, staining, and period handling exactly as expected from authentic wartime paper items.

An excellent research and collector opportunity for advanced German militaria collections focused on armored formations or late-war combat units.

Historical Description

The 26. Panzer-Division was formed in 1942 and served extensively on the Italian Front, where it became heavily engaged against advancing Allied forces following the invasion of Italy. The division participated in brutal defensive operations throughout central and northern Italy, including actions around Rome, the Gothic Line, and later retreat operations in 1944–1945.

The included document authorizing the wear of the Traditionsabzeichen der 26. Panzer-Division is particularly interesting. Such tradition badges were worn as unit identity symbols and fostered esprit de corps within veteran formations. The emblem shown here depicts a stylized armored arm holding a lance/spear within a circular device — one of the recognizable symbols associated with the division during the later war years.

The award document for the War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern) reflects military service performed under wartime conditions involving direct support to combat operations. By January 1945, Germany’s military situation had become increasingly desperate, making late-war named document groups from frontline Panzer formations especially compelling from a historical standpoint.

Named and matching multi-document groupings to identifiable soldiers of Panzer units are increasingly difficult to find today, especially when accompanied by original insignia and related correspondence.
