Knight’s Cross Recommendation: In the breakthrough against tough forest positions north of the Luga on 08.08.1941 Waldenfels led his men outstandingly. Later, during the attack on Soviet fieldworks near Vopolzowa on 13.08.1941, he and his men stormed through hostile minefields, bunkers and static tank turret positions to achieve their objective. Waldenfels personally led his men from the treeline and assisted in the capture of the first Soviet trench position. Despite strong flanking fire from Lopsi Waldenfels and his men were able to capture Vopolzowa after six days of battle and thus the division was finally able to break out of the forested/marshy terrain north of the Luga. For his contribution to this success Waldenfels received the Knight’s Cross.
