Historical Description

This grouping belonged to Oberschütze Ludwig Winter, a soldier who served with the 9. Kompanie of Füsilier-Regiment 27, part of the 12. Volksgrenadier-Division during the final phase of the war in the west.

The division fought in some of the harshest combat on the Western Front, including the fighting around Aachen, Stolberg and the Hürtgenwald.

A particularly attractive detail is the surviving combat day card documenting a Nahkampftag on 17 September 1944 at Atsch near Stolberg, directly connected to the fierce defensive battles preceding the Aachen campaign.

Even more significant is the included award document for the Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz, confirming Winter was wounded on 17 November 1944 during the devastating Battle of the Hürtgenwald — one of the bloodiest and most attritional campaigns fought by German and American forces on the Western Front.

Another fascinating aspect is the earlier award of the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse in 1941 while Winter served as a Regierungsrat, showing the transition from civilian governmental service to frontline infantry combat later in the war.

A very strong late-war combat Soldbuch grouping with documented Hürtgenwald service, close combat participation, wound documentation and extensive medical history.
