Authentic Soviet Medal “For the Capture of Königsberg” (Russian: «ЗА ВЗЯТИЕ КЕНИГСБЕРГА»), awarded to participants of the Battle of Königsberg during the final phase of the Second World War.

The medal is struck in brass and measures 32 mm in diameter, featuring a raised rim. The obverse displays a small five-pointed star with divergent rays at the top. Beneath it is the bold three-line inscription “FOR THE CAPTURE OF KÖNIGSBERG” («ЗА ВЗЯТИЕ КЕНИГСБЕРГА»), with a horizontal laurel branch below symbolizing victory.

The reverse features a plain five-pointed star at the top, with the date “10 APRIL 1945” («10 АПРЕЛЯ 1945») arranged in three lines beneath, marking the fall of Königsberg to Soviet forces.

The medal is suspended from a standard Soviet pentagonal mount, fitted with a 24 mm silk moiré ribbon incorporating narrow green edge stripes and alternating black and green central stripes. Historical Description

The Medal “For the Capture of Königsberg” (Russian: «Медаль «За взятие Кёнигсберга»») was a Soviet World War II campaign award established on 9 June 1945 by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, following a petition from the People’s Commissariat for Defense. It commemorates the Soviet victory in the Battle of Königsberg, during which forces of the USSR captured the heavily fortified city from Nazi Germany in April 1945. The statute governing the medal was later amended on 18 July 1980 to refine its provisions.

The award was granted to members of the Red Army, Soviet Navy, and NKVD troops who directly participated in the assault and capture of Königsberg, as well as to commanders and planners responsible for organizing and leading the operation. It recognized both frontline combat actions and the broader operational command efforts that contributed to the city’s fall.

Conferral of the medal was made in the name of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, on the basis of official documentation confirming participation in the campaign. Active-duty personnel typically received the medal through their unit commanders, while veterans and retired servicemen were decorated via regional, municipal, or district military commissariats.

In the official order of wear, the medal was positioned on the left side of the chest and ranked immediately after the Medal “For the Capture of Budapest.” When worn alongside decorations of the Russian Federation, those awards take precedence in accordance with modern regulations.
