Knight’s Cross: Awarded for the success of his Sturm-Abteilung Koch during the first day of the Battle of France. His men played a vital role in the German advance by seizing the Eben Emael fortress and the nearby bridges over the Albert Canal, achieving these seemingly impossible successes through their skill and employment of new weapons and tactics. As the commander in charge of this operation, Koch played an invaluable role in its success through his planning and leadership of this decisive set of events.
