War Merit Medal 1939 – Kriegsverdienstmedaille
€30,00
An original German War Merit Medal 1939 (Kriegsverdienstmedaille), instituted on 19 August 1940 to recognise contributions to the German war effort that did not warrant a higher award in the War Merit Cross series.
The obverse features a textured cross with a central circular medallion bearing a swastika, surrounded by a raised border. The reverse displays the Gothic inscription “Für Kriegsverdienst 1939” (“For War Merit 1939”).
The medal retains its suspension ring and its distinctive black ribbon with a narrow red central stripe and red-and-white edging.
Historical Background
The War Merit Medal was the lowest award in the War Merit Cross series. It recognised contributions to the wartime effort, particularly in civilian and industrial contexts, although it could also be awarded to military personnel. Recipients included workers in armaments production and individuals involved in wartime support services. The medal was awarded in large numbers during the Second World War.
Condition
The medal displays an attractive aged bronze-coloured patina, with visible surface wear and minor discolouration. The raised details and inscription remain clearly defined. The ribbon is present and shows signs of age and handling. Please examine the photographs carefully for the precise condition.
