Historical Description

The Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42 Medal, commonly referred to by collectors as the “Ostmedaille” or “Frozen Meat Medal,” was instituted on 26 May 1942 to commemorate German military personnel who endured the brutal first winter campaign on the Eastern Front between 1941 and 1942. The decoration was awarded to soldiers of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS who participated in combat operations under extremely harsh winter conditions.

This example is a desirable maker marked “107” variant, attributed to Carl Wild, Hamburg. The medal retains an attractive darkened finish with honest period wear and remains complete with its original ribbon.

The reverse bears the inscription: “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42”

while the obverse displays the national eagle over a swastika, characteristic of the award’s iconic wartime design.

A classic and highly collectible Eastern Front campaign medal from the Second World War.
