Historical Description

The Gordon Highlanders were one of the most prominent Scottish infantry regiments of the British Army, with a long and distinguished history. During WWII, they served across multiple major theatres of war.

In 1940, battalions of the regiment were deployed to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force, with many taking part in the fighting withdrawal leading to the Dunkirk evacuation.

They later saw extensive combat in North Africa, including the decisive Second Battle of El Alamein, where Allied forces halted and reversed Axis advances. The regiment continued its service in the Italian Campaign, fighting through difficult mountainous terrain and fortified positions.

From 1944 onward, the Gordon Highlanders were engaged in the North-West Europe campaign following the Normandy landings, taking part in the advance through France, the Low Countries, and into Germany.

As a Highland regiment, they wore traditional Scottish dress elements, including the Tam o’ Shanter, making surviving wartime examples like this both historically significant and highly collectible.
