WWII German Military Bakelite Signal Lantern / Trench Lamp – WaA Marked – Red Marble Bakelite

Original Second World War German military signal lantern / trench lamp constructed largely from distinctive marbled red-brown Bakelite, a material heavily used in wartime German equipment production due to metal shortages.

The lantern retains its original Bakelite body, hinged front access door, carry handle, reflector assembly, and focusing lens system. The attractive marbled Bakelite construction gives the piece exceptional display appeal and is highly characteristic of wartime German field equipment manufacture.

Importantly, the lantern is Waffenamt (WaA) marked, with a visible WaA inspection stamp present on the reverse metal hinge, confirming wartime German military acceptance.

The front door opens correctly and the lower base section can still be unscrewed for access to the interior components. Inside, remnants of candle wax are visible, indicating the lantern was at some point adapted for candle use after the original internal lighting assembly was lost or removed.

The lamp is incomplete and missing:

  • the original internal lighting/burner assembly,
  • one side glass panel,
  • and the heavy-duty hanging hook.

Despite the missing parts, the lantern remains a very attractive and authentic wartime display piece with strong visual character.

These lamps were commonly used for:

  • trench or bunker lighting,
  • map reading,
  • signaling duties,
  • railway or transport use,
  • and general field illumination.

Condition shows honest age, field wear, surface oxidation to metal fittings, and wartime/postwar use throughout. The Bakelite body remains visually striking and displays very well.

A scarce and decorative example of German wartime Bakelite equipment, perfect for display.

Condition exactly as shown in the photographs.

Historical Description

During WWII, Germany increasingly relied on Bakelite and other synthetic materials as strategic metals became scarce. Bakelite became widely used in military production for radios, electrical devices, lighting equipment, communication gear, and field accessories because it was durable, heat resistant, and economical to manufacture.

Portable lanterns such as this example served an important role in trenches, bunkers, railway operations, command posts, and rear-area logistical units. Their enclosed construction protected the light source from wind and weather while helping reduce visible light exposure during blackout conditions.

The reflector and lens system on this example suggest it was designed to project focused directional light rather than simple ambient illumination, making it suitable for signaling or controlled field lighting applications.

The marbled red-brown Bakelite finish is especially sought after today and gives the piece excellent visual and display appeal among collectors of German wartime equipment and Bakelite artifacts.
