Historical Description

Artillerie-Regiment 251

Artillerie-Regiment 251 formed the artillery component of the 251. Infanterie-Division. The regiment provided fire support for the division’s infantry regiments and was continuously engaged in combat on the Eastern Front from the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa onward.

251. Infanterie-Division

The 251. Infanterie-Division was formed in August 1939 and participated in the campaigns in the West before being transferred to the Soviet Union in 1941. The division fought in the central sector of the Eastern Front and became heavily involved in the bitter battles around Rzhev, one of the most costly and overlooked campaigns of the war. The division remained in the Rzhev area until 1943, sustaining significant casualties during prolonged combat operations.

About the Signatory

The document is hand-signed by Generalleutnant Karl Burdach (1891–1976).

Burdach commanded the 251. Infanterie-Division from August 1941 until December 1942, exactly the period in which this award was issued. He later commanded the 11. Infanterie-Division and became a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. He was also awarded the German Cross in Gold while serving as commander of the 251st Infantry Division.
