Historical Description
The Verwundetenabzeichen (Wound Badge) was originally instituted during the First World War and reintroduced in 1939 for German military personnel wounded during combat.
The black grade was generally awarded for:
- One or two combat wounds
- Frostbite injuries
- Certain combat-related trauma sustained in active service
The badge became one of the most widely awarded German combat decorations of the Second World War and was worn by soldiers from all branches of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS.
