Historical Description

Hans Eichmeier was born on 13 August 1897 in Munich, Bavaria. During the Second World War he served in the Luftwaffe and eventually attained the rank of Major der Reserve.

As commander of leichte Flak-Abteilung 854 (v), Eichmeier led an anti-aircraft formation operating in support of German ground forces on the Eastern Front. Besides engaging enemy aircraft, such units were frequently employed in a ground-combat role against Soviet infantry and armored attacks during the increasingly difficult defensive battles of 1944.

For the achievements of his Flak-Abteilung in the sector of Heeresgruppe Mitte, Eichmeier was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on 11 June 1944. Contemporary sources describe his unit as one of the more successful Flak formations operating within its sector during this period.

This photograph was officially released to the German press on 12 July 1944 as part of the wartime propaganda and news distribution system that publicized decorated servicemen throughout the German Reich.
