Original German Second World War press photograph depicting Generalfeldmarschall Walter Model, holder of the Oak Leaves with Swords to the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross and commander of a German Army Group on the Eastern Front, together with Generaloberst Vitéz Béla Miklós von Lakatos, commander of a Hungarian field army operating alongside German forces.

The photograph shows the two senior Axis commanders inspecting newly arrived Hungarian armored units deployed in the sector around Stanislau on the Eastern Front. Visible in the foreground is a Hungarian armored fighting vehicle, emphasizing the cooperation between German and Hungarian forces during the later stages of the war in the East.

The reverse retains its original wartime typed press caption, press stampings, and period photographer credit. The caption is dated 21 April 1944 and identifies the image as an official wartime press release.

Historical Description

Walter Model (1891–1945) was one of Germany’s most prominent field commanders during the Second World War and earned the nickname “Hitler’s Fireman” due to his repeated deployment to critical sectors of the front. By 1944 he held the rank of Generalfeldmarschall and commanded major German formations on the Eastern Front during increasingly difficult defensive operations against advancing Soviet forces.

Accompanying him in this photograph is Generaloberst Vitéz Béla Miklós von Lakatos (1890–1948), a senior Hungarian military commander who led Hungarian formations fighting alongside the Wehrmacht. Later in 1944 he would become an important political and military figure within Hungary during the final phase of the war.

The caption states that the two commanders were inspecting newly arrived Hungarian armored formations in the area of Stanislau (today Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine), a strategically important region during Soviet offensives in 1944.

This photograph was released through the German wartime press service on 21 April 1944 and represents an excellent period image documenting Axis military cooperation on the Eastern Front.
