Historical Description

The Iron Cross 2nd Class was Germany’s principal decoration for bravery and distinguished conduct in combat.

This example was awarded to Gefreiter Otto Dahm of the 9th Company, Grenadier-Regiment 410, one of the three infantry regiments of the 122nd Infantry Division. The award date of February 1944 places Dahm in active combat during the heavy defensive fighting in the northern Eastern Front sector as German forces attempted to hold back advancing Soviet armies.

Named combat award documents from front-line infantry regiments are consistently sought after, particularly when linked to divisions with extensive Eastern Front service.

Grenadier-Regiment 410

Grenadier-Regiment 410 was one of the core infantry regiments of the 122. Infanterie-Division. The regiment participated in numerous campaigns on the Eastern Front, including operations around Leningrad, Demyansk, the Baltic region, and later defensive actions in Estonia and Latvia.

122. Infanterie-Division (“Greif Division”)

The 122nd Infantry Division was formed in October 1940 and served almost exclusively on the Eastern Front. The division fought in:

  • Operation Barbarossa
  • The advance toward Leningrad
  • The Demyansk battles
  • Defensive operations in the Baltic States
  • Narva and Estonia
  • The Courland Pocket

The division earned the nickname “Greif Division” and developed a reputation as a reliable front-line infantry formation throughout the war.
