Historical Description
Instituted on 17 October 1938, the Medal “For Combat Merit” was one of the Soviet Union’s most important military decorations. It was awarded to Red Army, Navy, NKVD, and later Soviet Armed Forces personnel for courageous actions, excellent military service, combat support, and achievements contributing to the success of military operations.
During the Second World War, millions of Soviet servicemen fought on the Eastern Front, and the medal became a respected recognition for bravery and distinguished service under combat conditions. Recipients included infantrymen, artillerymen, tank crews, signalmen, engineers, and other personnel whose actions directly contributed to military success.
The award features the inscription “СССР” (USSR) above the words “За Боевые Заслуги” (“For Combat Merit”), with crossed rifle and sabre below. The reverse bears an officially engraved serial number.
