An original-looking German Infantry Assault Badge in Silver (Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen in Silber) from the Second World War, manufactured by Gebrüder Wegerhoff of Lüdenscheid, identified by the distinctive GWL maker’s mark on the reverse.

The badge features the characteristic German eagle with outstretched wings, positioned above a Karabiner 98k rifle with fixed bayonet, enclosed within an oval oak-leaf wreath. The detailed relief and remaining silver-coloured finish make this a recognisable example of the German Army’s infantry combat decoration.

The reverse displays the clearly visible GWL mark within a circular cartouche. The badge has a single-piece zinc construction, with a vertical pin fastening assembly.

Historical Background

The Infantry Assault Badge was instituted on 20 December 1939 by Generaloberst Walther von Brauchitsch. The silver grade recognised qualifying combat participation by infantry and mountain infantry personnel during the Second World War.

The original award criteria included participation in at least three separate infantry assaults on different days. The decoration recognised frontline combat service and the demanding role of infantrymen in ground operations.
