Photo Grouping – U-Boat Crewman (U-48 – Most succesful U-Boat of WWII!)

350,00

Remarkable and diverse original photograph collection belonging to a Kriegsmarine U-Boat crew member, possibly of the famed U-48, the most successful German submarine of the Second World War. The set comprises 14 period photographs, showing the sailor’s career progression, service aboard a U-Boat, and several earlier images from his Imperial German Navy (WWI) service.

The highlight of the grouping are multiple photographs depicting U-Boat conning tower artwork and crew scenes on deck, including a clearly visible tower painting matching that of U-48 — the “laughing swordfish” motif associated with this legendary vessel. Several photos show officers and enlisted men posing beside the decorated U-Boat hull, along with portraits both in uniform and casual settings.

The remaining images document a rich personal and military history, featuring:

  • Crew group portraits taken both at sea and on land

  • Tower close-ups and harbor scenes, showing Kriegsmarine flags and deck fittings

  • Individual studio portraits in U-Boat dress uniforms, with badges and insignia visible

  • Earlier WWI-era naval photos, likely of the same man during his first period of service

Historical Context:
U-48 was commissioned in 1939 and became the most successful submarine of the Second World War, credited with sinking over 50 Allied ships (approximately 306,000 tons) before being scuttled in 1945. The presence of tower art and uniform details consistent with early-war Kriegsmarine U-Boat units strongly suggests these images relate to personnel of this elite vessel or one within its flotilla.

Collector’s Note:
Authentic U-Boat photographs — particularly those showing tower art — are exceptionally rare and highly sought after among Kriegsmarine collectors. This set offers not only identifiable imagery from an early and highly successful U-Boat but also a personalized service record across both World Wars, adding significant historical depth.
The prints are period originals on wartime photographic paper, several with studio stamps or annotations on reverse.

Manchurian Incident Medal (Cased)

Original price was: €80,00.Current price is: €60,00.

A fine and complete example of the Showa 6–9 War Service Medal (Manchurian Incident Medal), awarded to personnel who served during the early Imperial Japanese military operations of the Manchurian Incident (1931–1934)—a conflict that marked the beginning of Japan’s expansionary campaigns leading into the Second Sino-Japanese War and ultimately the Pacific War.

Instituted in 1934, the medal was issued to members of the Army, Navy, and supporting organizations who took part in combat operations, logistical support, or administrative duties related to the campaign. Its obverse features the Imperial chrysanthemum crest above a spread-winged eagle, symbolizing military strength and the authority of the Emperor. The reverse displays two crossed military helmets and inscriptions denoting the Showa era years Six to Nine. The ribbon—shades of red with yellow and white stripes—represents loyalty and valor.

Condition & Presentation

This example remains in very good condition, showing an attractive, untouched patina consistent with its age. The medal is housed in its original black case, which retains sharp gold kanji lettering on the lid. The interior is lined with the classic yellow felt insert that securely holds the piece in place.

Collector’s Notes

  • Complete and original medal with full ribbon and suspension bar

  • Crisp detail to the eagle, chrysanthemum, and reverse inscriptions

  • Case remains solid, with only minor wear from handling

  • A desirable early-Showa period decoration connected to one of the pivotal turning points in Japanese military history

An excellent addition for collectors of Imperial Japanese medals, early militaria, or those focusing on the Manchurian and pre-WWII military campaigns.

Japanese Victory Medal (Cased)

Original price was: €125,00.Current price is: €100,00.

Original Japanese Victory Medal in very good condition with matching wooden case.

The Victory Medal was a commemorative military medal of Japan awarded to mark service during the First World War. Established by Imperial Edict #406 on 17 September 1920, it was one of the series of Victory Medals created and awarded by the victorious allies after the First World War. Fifteen nations in all issued a version of the medal. All shared the rainbow suspension and service ribbon, but the medals’ designs varied by country. Japan’s design was different from all other versions as it did not depict the goddess Victory. This figure from Roman mythology would have no connection to Japanese culture, so a depiction of Takemikazuchi, the war god in Japanese mythology occupies the obverse of the medal. (Source: Wikipedia)

Taishō Enthronement Commemorative Medal (Cased)

Original price was: €95,00.Current price is: €65,00.

Issued to honor one of Japan’s most important imperial events, the Taishō Enthronement Commemorative Medal celebrates the accession of Emperor Taishō, who assumed the throne in 1912 following the death of Emperor Meiji. Although the succession occurred in 1912, the formal enthronement ceremonies—grand national celebrations steeped in tradition—were held in 1915, and it was during these festivities that the medals were awarded.

Bestowed upon individuals across Japan who took part in or contributed to the ceremonies, the medal exists in both men’s and women’s versions. The obverse features two banners bearing the word “Banzai”—a symbolic cheer of long life and loyalty—encapsulating the national spirit surrounding the new Emperor.

  • Housed in its matching wooden presentation case, complete with crisp golden characters on the lid
  • Box and medal both in very good condition, showing only minimal age

  • A fully authentic and desirable Imperial-era piece

Collector’s Note

Artifacts from the Taishō period are increasingly sought after due to their transitional place between the Meiji modernization and the militarization of the Shōwa era. This medal, especially with its original case, is a fine representation of early 20th-century Japanese imperial craftsmanship and ceremony—an elegant addition to any collection of Japanese orders, medals, or imperial memorabilia.

Karl-Heinz Ertel – SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 49 “De Ruyter” (“Nederland” Division)

55,00

Original Postwar Signature on a Postwar Photo of Karl-Heinz Ertel. SS-Hauptsturmführer Karl-Heinz Ertel (26.11.1919 in Brambauer † 25.01.1993 in Langenberg) earned the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on August 23, 1944 as SS-Hauptsturmführer und Adjutant of the SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 49 “De Ruyter” of the SS-Freiwilligen-Panzer-Grenadier-Brigade “Nederland”. Comes with extra signed letter.

Ritterkreuz: “Following heavy retreat battles, on the night of the 25./26.07.1944 the Tannenberg Line between Orphanage Hill and the Gulf of Finland was occupied by the Regiment 49 ‘De Ruyter’. The Regiment had the mission of holding this line against all enemy attacks. The enemy commenced an immediate assault with a much greater number of divisions, which were aided by strong tank, artillery and air support. In a sacrificial battle, the Regiment succeeded in defeating all enemy attacks with extremely high losses for the foe. In this major struggle the commander of the Regiment, SS-Obersturmbannführer Collani, fell in battle. In this moment of crisis his adjutant, SS-Hauptsturmführer Ertel, took over leadership of the Regiment. Undeterred by the strong enemy fire from tanks, rocket launchers, artillery and aircraft, he repeatedly went to the hotspots of the fighting. From these points he inspired officers, NCOs and men to offer up their greatest possible resistance via his own exemplary behaviour. Even after being wounded by a shell splinter to the face he remained with the Regiment and maintained a firm grip over its command. His crisis-proof, exemplary attitude was of immeasurable value to the Brigade in the hours of its greatest test on the battlefield. He significantly contributed to the prevention of the intended enemy breakthrough against Reval.”

Award Doc Group to Uffz. Karl Finkenrath (Executed for War Crimes for Executing British Paratroopers on D-Day!)

775,00

A historically significant document group belonging to Unteroffizier Karl Finkenrath, a German Army combat engineer who served on the Eastern Front in 1941–42 and later with Pionier-Bataillon 716 in Normandy during the Allied invasion in June 1944.

The group consists of two original wartime award documents and accompanying papers related to the trial.

Documents included

1. Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse (Iron Cross 2nd Class)

  • Awarded: September 1941

  • Unit: 1. Kompanie / Pionier-Bataillon 253

  • Theatre: Eastern Front

2. Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42 (Eastern Front Medal)

  • Awarded for service in winter campaign 1941–42

  • Issued later in 1944

  • Issuing unit: Pionier-Bataillon 716

This later issue document is particularly noteworthy as it was issued while Finkenrath was serving with Pionier-Bataillon 716, the engineer unit stationed in Normandy prior to the Allied invasion.

Historical Context

By June 1944, Finkenrath was serving as an Unteroffizier in Pionier-Bataillon 716, part of the German forces defending the Atlantic Wall in Normandy.

His unit was stationed at the Ferme du Lieu Haras in the village of Hérouvillette, east of the Orne River, in the operational area of the British airborne landings during D-Day.

War Crime Case

During the early hours of 6 June 1944, several British airborne soldiers from the 6th Airborne Division were captured near the farm where Finkenrath’s unit was based.

Witness testimony from both German soldiers and French civilians later established that:

  • wounded and disarmed British paratroopers were brought to the farm

  • at least two prisoners of war were deliberately shot after capture

  • the shootings occurred away from combat

These killings were later investigated by British authorities as violations of the laws of war.

Trial and Conviction

After the war, the case was investigated by the British Army’s war-crimes investigation teams.

Finkenrath was arrested in 1947 and tried by a British Military Court in Hamburg in 1948.

He admitted shooting two captured prisoners but claimed he had acted under orders from his company commander. The court rejected this defense.

He was convicted of the murder of two Allied prisoners of war and sentenced to death.

Finkenrath was executed by hanging on 9 June 1948 at Hameln Prison, one of a number of executions carried out there for war crimes after the Second World War.

Collector Interest

This document group links two major theatres of the war:

  • Eastern Front combat service (1941–42)

  • Normandy during the Allied invasion (1944)

The Winterschlacht im Osten document issued by Pionier-Bataillon 716 directly connects the group to the unit present in Hérouvillette during the opening hours of D-Day.

The later war-crimes investigation and trial provide a well-documented historical context for the individual to whom the documents were issued.
