Awarded for his achievements as the gunner of a “Pantherturm” along the Via Casilina road (specifically near Piedimonte). He destroyed 7 allied tanks on the 21.05.1944, 6 more on the 22.05.1944 and finally an additional 7 on the 24.05.1944. After this the crew of the Pantherturm (christened “Schlafmütze” or sleepyhead) blew up their gun and retreated north with the rest of the German defenders. Fries was recognized appropriately for his total of 20 tank kills during this short time period in a critical area of the battle.

During World War II, Buchner logged 631 combat missions, of which 215 on the Messerschmitt Bf 109E, 396 on the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, and 20 on the Messerschmitt Me 262. He was shot down five times, including two bail outs with a parachute, and was wounded twice. Buchner was credited with 58 aerial victories—46 on the Eastern Front and 12 flying the Me 262 in Defence of the Reich. Service & Fate:
Engelbrecht served aboard U-609, a Type VIIC U-boat of the Kriegsmarine. On 6 February 1943, at 2204 hours, U-609 was sunk in the North Atlantic south-east of Cape Farwell, Greenland, at position 54.56N, 28.11W. The submarine was destroyed by depth charges from the Free French corvette Lobelia. All 47 crew members perished, with no survivors.

Service & Fate:
Bergbauer served aboard U-460, a Type XIV “Milchkuh” supply submarine of the Kriegsmarine. On 4 October 1943, the boat was sunk in the North Atlantic north of the Azores, at position 43.18N, 28.58W, by depth charges from Avenger and Wildcat aircraft (VC-9) of the American escort carrier USS Card. Of the crew, 62 men were killed and only 2 survived.

On April 1, 1942 he was promoted to active officer and captain, on August 7, 1942 he became commander of the II Battalion. On August 17, 1942, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross for his services as a company commander. In March 1944 he was seriously wounded and on April 13, 1944 he was awarded the Oak Leaves as a major for his services as commander of the II Battalion. After his recovery, on September 1, 1944, he took over the leadership of the “Greater Germany” guard battalion in Berlin. On October 1, 1944, this battalion was upgraded to a regiment and Hogrebe became its first commander. As a lieutenant colonel, he took part in the final battles for Berlin with the regiment.
