In this time he and his men cleaned up numerous Soviet penetrations via energetic counterattacks and, on one occasion, he recaptured a commanding height in an attack launched on his own initiative. Mulzer would receive the Knight’s Cross for these actions.”
Oakleaves: “Near the end of 1943 the Pionier-Bataillon 195 occupied a defensive sector west of Bobruisk. Following an artillery barrage the Soviets attacked this sector with significant forces on a broad front. With his last reserves, namely soldiers from his staff as well as some drivers, Major Mulzer was able to eject the Soviet soldiers from his position and bring the attack in his sector to a halt. Meanwhile however the Soviets had managed to break through in the right neighbouring sector, and from here they threatened to roll up the whole Division’s frontline. Mulzer quickly recognized this danger and, assembling as many soldiers as could be spared, he launched a flank attack against this new opposing force. After a short but violent battle, the Soviets here fled after having suffered heavy losses. Major Mulzer then threw up a temporary defensive front and was able to hold it against all new hostile breakthrough attempts until the arrival of reinforcements. Through his bravery and decisiveness, Mulzer had thus averted a great danger for the whole German frontline west of Bobruisk. He would thus be awarded the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross.”

Knight’s Cross recommendation: “During February 1943 the Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 32 was in position about 50 km northeast of Orel. The Soviets launched a tank-supported attack against this Bataillon in the middle of the month. Obergefreiter Arndt was thus given the task of proceeding to the forward strongpoint “Dora” and delivering orders for its garrison to pull back to the primary defensive strongpoint “Cäsar”. Arndt had barely passed on these orders when the Soviets were upon the defenders. A tank opened up direct fire on Arndt himself, however Arndt managed to keep control over his nerves and allow the tank to come closer before destroying it with a T-mine. Despite the warnings of his comrades, Arndt remained in the strongpoint as the garrisoning Kompanie pulled back. Totally alone, he engaged the attacking Soviets with a captured co-axial machine-gun. A deadly game of cat and mouse followed, however Arndt was repeatedly able to evade the Soviets via an underground pipe system that the attackers were unaware of. Using this system, he was able to repeatedly appear in the Soviet rear and inflict heavy losses. He ultimately managed to return to the primary defensive strongpoint while also taking back 10 prisoners. Arndt thereby managed to prevent a potentially devastating breakthrough despite being all on his own. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross for his bravery.”

He would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross for this action.

Gebirgs-Division over the Oise Canal at Coucy le Chateau and its own crossing of the canal, the Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 98 received the mission of securing the open left flank in anticipation of the main German attack the next day. The Panzerabwehr-Zug under Pössinger was responsible for tank defense along the left wing of this security detail. On this day an enemy tank attack was met by Pössinger’s Zug alone and was thrown back here, with Leutnant Pössinger personally manning the first gun. Showing brave and exemplary behaviour, he alone continued to serve the gun in the strongest of enemy tank fire. He can be credited with both the leadership of the defense here as well as the destruction of 6 enemy tanks.”
Oakleaves recommendation: “Battalion Pössinger had already thrown back an enemy battlegroup consisting of two companies in the area around Landsberg (East Prussia). Following this they continued to push north towards Hanshagen, from which they began to receive strong flanking fire. In response to this Major Pössinger personally stormed into the heavily defended town at the head of his Grenadiers. In doing so he seized a cornerstone of the enemy break-in area here, and his Grenadiers managed to capture (among other things) 13 enemy anti-tank and infantry guns. Major Pössinger was born on 18.01.1919 in Ettal (Upper Bavaria) as the son of a farmer. He has already been awarded the Knight’s Cross on 19.07.1940.”
Reichsarzt SS und Polizei Ernst-Robert Grawitz (War Crimes) (Suicide 1945)

Grawitz was born in Charlottenburg, in the western part of Berlin, Germany. As Reichsarzt SS und Polizei, Grawitz was also head of the German Red Cross. Grawitz funded Nazi attempts to “eradicate the perverted world of the homosexual” and research into attempts to “cure” homosexuality. This involved experimentation on inmates in Nazi concentration camps. He was in charge of “enthusiastic” experiments on concentration camp inmates.
Grawitz was also a part of the group in charge of the murder of mentally ill and physically handicapped people in the Action T4 “euthanasia” programme, including children from 1939. The officials selected the doctors who were to carry out the operational part of the killing programme. In addition, researchers both in and outside the SS wanted to exploit the supply of inmates held in the SS camps and use them for experiments. In order to do so, the interested parties had to apply to Grawitz, who forwarded requests to Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler who then gave final approval.
Towards the end of World War II in Europe, Grawitz was a physician in Adolf Hitler’s Führerbunker. When he heard that other officials were leaving Berlin in order to escape the advancing Soviet Red Army, Grawitz petitioned Hitler to allow him to leave Berlin; his request was denied. As the Soviet Army advanced on Berlin, Grawitz killed himself and his family with grenades at their house in Babelsberg.

Recommandation for the Knight’s Cross: On 18.07.1943 Schulze led his Panzer platoon in a daring attack on a key hill held by the Soviets. Despite being wounded in the neck he continued to lead at the point of the assault, where upon reaching the hilltop they flushed the enemy troops out of their bunkers with machine pistols and hand grenades. This enabled the friendly German infantry to move in and seize this position, which was vital for containing the major enemy break-in attempt along the Mius. For this action Schulze would receive the Knight’s Cross.

Juli 1944” in Schwarz and was a member of the Leibstandarte-SS Adolf Hitler before he became Adolf Hitler’s personal adjutant. With the end of Nazi Germany imminent, Günsche was tasked by Hitler on 30 April 1945 with ensuring the cremation of his body after his death. That afternoon, he stood guard outside the room in the Führerbunker where Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide. After waiting a few minutes, Hitler’s valet, Heinz Linge, opened the study door with Martin Bormann at his side. The two men entered the study with Günsche right behind them.
