Kurt Bühlingen served with the Luftwaffe from 1936 until early 1945. At first he joined the Luftwaffe as a mechanic, but underwent flying training in 1938 and 1939. He was placed with Jagdgeschwader 2 in July 1940 as pilot with the rank of Unteroffizier. In September 1940 he scored his first enemy kill. In December 1942 he claimed his 40th victory while serving with II. / Jagdgeschwader 2 in Tunisia, North Africa. In March 1943 he returned to Europe. A year later he had scored 96 kills and commanded II. / Jagdgeschwader 2 with the rank of Major. Later he led the Jagdgeschwader 2 during fighting on the Eastern Front. As Kommodore of Jagdgeschwader 2, due to an engine failure, he was forced to land in enemy territory in early 1945 and was taken POW by the Soviets. He stayed in imprisonment until 1950. From Military Wikia: Wiscliceny enlisted in the SS-Stabswache Berlin in 1933, he was posted in 1938 to the Der Führer Regiment, seeing his first action as a company commander in the Balkans in spring 1941. He spent 1941 to 1943 on the Eastern Front and 1944 in France, fighting in all the battles of the senior SS divisions, and being wounded four times. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross for leadership of a battalion during the battles for the Kursk salient in July 1943. He received the Oak Leaves on 27 December 1944, at the Normandy invasion front. The Swords were awarded for his actions in the Ardennes, Hungary and Austria. In 1945 he was handed over by the US Army to the French during investigations into his division’s war crimes at Tulle and Oradour-sur-Glane, but was released in 1951. His brother Hauptsturmführer Dieter Wisliceny served in the staff of Obersturmbannfuhrer Adolf Eichmann. He was involved in the deportation of the Hungarian Jews in 1944. He was tried for war crimes and executed in Bratislava on 4 May 1948.

Knight’s Cross: “On 29.07.1944 Schrijnen was serving as the crew of a Pak 40 in the middle of a major Soviet tank/infantry attack. His position was hit by a heavy artillery barrage, with several rounds impacting just 10 metres behind the gun. Schrijnen was hit by several shell splinters, but the four other crewman all became casualties. Under the weight of the Soviet attack the order was given to withdraw. Schrijnen however disobeyed the order and remained behind to cover his comrades. Despite being wounded, exhausted and vastly outnumbered he was still able to knock out 4 T-34s and 3 IS-2s before his gun was destroyed. Later, counterattacking German forces found Schrijnen unconscious on the battlefield. He would receive the Knight’s Cross for his actions this day as well as for prior successes as an anti-tank gunner.”

Winrich Behr was a German officer during World War II. He was on the intelligence staff of the Sixth Army during the Stalingrad encirclement. Behr had served Friedrich Paulus, Erwin Rommel, Gunther von Kluge and Walter Model. He was the witness of Model’s last hours in Ruhr Pocket. In January 1943 he was sent by Paulus to try to convince Hitler of the hopelessness of winning the war on the Eastern Front; this mission did not succeed. (Wikipedia)

Awarded for the outstanding leadership of his Sturmgeschütz-Brigade during the fighting in late 1944 and early 1945. The following evening report sent from the XXVII. Armee-Korps to the 2. Armee on the 14.02.1945 describes the fighting of the Brigade that formed the most important element of Kröhne’s being decorated with the Knight’s Cross…
“The Korps has nominated the Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 190 for a citation in a Wehrmachtbericht addendum. This Brigade has fought in daily engagements at the hotspots of the Korps front since the 14.01.1945, that is, for a whole month. In this time it has played a decisive part in fulfilling the objectives of the Korps and in maintaining the integrity of its frontline under the careful guidance of its excellent commander, Major Kröhne. In this time the Brigade destroyed 104 enemy tanks and 106 anti-tank guns for the loss of just 4 Sturmgeschütze. Of particular note is that the Brigade, despite daily operations and receiving no replacement vehicles, has nonetheless been able to maintain relatively high numbers of battle-worthy vehicles.”
