Knight’s Cross awarded for: During the time period 17.-22.03.1944 Leutnant Carius led 3 Tiger tanks in a series of engagements with Soviet armour near the village of Lembitu (west of Narva). Within 3 days he and his 3 Tigers destroyed 28 tanks, 4 assault guns and 17 artillery pieces. He would be subsequently awarded the Knight’s Cross for the local successes he achieved in this capacity.

Oakleaves awarded for: On the 22.07.1944 Leutnant Carius led a bold attack into the village of Malinava (northeast of Dünaburg) with only himself and his wingman Albert Kerscher. He and his two Tigers charged in Malinava and engaged the force of 17 Soviet tanks positioned there. Of these Carius destroyed 10, Kerscher 4 and a nearby force of Sturmgeschütze 3. Among this tally of destroyed armour were several IS-2 heavy tanks. By executing this bold operation, accomplished with no friendly losses, Leutnant Carius prevented the continuation of the Soviet breakthrough towards Dünaburg and therefore enabled a friendly defensive front to be built. He would be awarded the Oakleaves in recognition of this feat. (Source: Traces of War)

The document confirms the award of the Medaille Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42, commonly known among collectors as the Ostmedaille or “Frozen Meat Medal”, for service on the Eastern Front during the brutal winter campaign of 1941–42.

The certificate bears the official regimental stamp of Artillerie-Regiment 70 and an original wartime signature for certification (“Für die Richtigkeit”).

A desirable named and unit-marked Eastern Front award document belonging to an artillery soldier who participated in one of the harshest campaigns of the Second World War.

This type of packaging was used for Wehrmacht long-service awards, issued to personnel of the Wehrmacht.

Constructed from thin, period waxed paper, typical of wartime award packaging. The packet remains in good, untouched condition, showing expected creasing, handling wear, and age-related discoloration (see images).

Original award packets are often missing, as they were frequently discarded after presentation. As such, surviving examples—especially clearly marked and legible—are increasingly difficult to find.

A desirable accessory piece for completing a Wehrmacht long-service award set or for display alongside period decorations.

Schreiber-Obergefreiter Walther Gerhold (8 June 1921 – 2 March 2013) was a Kriegsmarine sailor and recipient of the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes for his daring action as a one-man torpedo operator with the Kleinkampfverbände.

  • Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes – 6 July 1944, as Schreiber-Obergefreiter und Einmanntorpedofahrer with Kleinkampf-Flottille 361.

  • Citation:

    “The 23-year-old Schreiberobergefreiter Walter Gerhold, from Sauerland, is the first lone fighter from the Kriegsmarine to be awarded the Knight’s Cross for sinking a British cruiser of the Aurora-class under the most difficult conditions. Commanding his human torpedo, Gerhold passed six British destroyers at close range, broke through their security ring, and attacked a cruiser lying behind it with a skillful and calculated approach. The ship sank following a major boiler explosion. For his bravery before the enemy, Gerhold was also promoted to Schreibermaat.”

Collector’s Note

Walther Gerhold holds a special place in Kriegsmarine history as the first one-man torpedo operator to be decorated with the Knight’s Cross. His bold solo mission against a heavily defended Royal Navy formation showcases the extreme risks undertaken by the Kleinkampfverbände (small battle units). Autographs from Gerhold are scarce, making this postcard an excellent addition for collectors of Kriegsmarine and naval special forces memorabilia.

Generalleutnant Erich Reuter (30 March 1904, Frankfurt an der Oder † 30 October 1989, Bad Nauheim) was a German Army officer who rose to the rank of Generalleutnant during the Second World War. He distinguished himself as a regimental and divisional commander, becoming a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and the German Cross in Gold.
