Historical Description
The Medaille Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42 was instituted on 26 May 1942 to recognize German and Axis personnel who endured the catastrophic winter fighting on the Eastern Front between November 1941 and April 1942.
To qualify, soldiers generally had to:
- Serve at least 14 days in active combat,
- Be wounded in action,
- Or serve a specified period under the extreme winter conditions.
The winter of 1941–42 became infamous for temperatures dropping below -30°C, inadequate winter equipment, widespread frostbite, and immense casualties. For many veterans, the Ostmedaille symbolized survival against both the Soviet Army and the severe Russian winter.
Artillerie-Regiment 70 formed part of the German Army’s artillery arm, providing fire support for infantry and armored units during operations on the Eastern Front. Artillery personnel often operated under difficult frontline conditions while maintaining support for advancing or defensive formations.
