45,00

Original Postwar Signature on a Card (Photo pasted on it) of Alfred Gause. Generalleutnant Alfred Gause (14.02.1896 † 30.09.1967) earned the Ritterkreuz on December 13, 1941 as Generalmajor und Stabschef of the Generalstab d. Panzergruppe “Afrika”. Served as Rommel’s Chief of Staff.

During the Second World War he was a highly valued staff officer. Gause was initially sent to Africa with a large staff by Oberkommando des Heeres (OKH), the German Army High Command, to act as a liaison officer with the Italian high command, Comando Supremo. Gause had specific instructions not to place himself under the command of Erwin Rommel, but did so when Rommel told him categorically that the command of all troops in Africa were vested in him. This was not correct, but Gause acceded to Rommel’s authority, and served as his chief of staff. He proved invaluable to the famous desert commander, who was well known to direct his forces from the front and who frequently would lose touch with his command staff during operations. Gause spent two and a half years serving Rommel in the Afrika Korps. Though initially sent by OKH to keep an eye on the independent commander, they soon developed an excellent working relationship. In December, 1941 Gause was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. (Read more on Alfred Gause (Wikipedia))

Ritterkreuz: “Following heavy retreat battles, on the night of the 25./26.07.1944 the Tannenberg Line between Orphanage Hill and the Gulf of Finland was occupied by the Regiment 49 ‘De Ruyter’. The Regiment had the mission of holding this line against all enemy attacks. The enemy commenced an immediate assault with a much greater number of divisions, which were aided by strong tank, artillery and air support. In a sacrificial battle, the Regiment succeeded in defeating all enemy attacks with extremely high losses for the foe. In this major struggle the commander of the Regiment, SS-Obersturmbannführer Collani, fell in battle. In this moment of crisis his adjutant, SS-Hauptsturmführer Ertel, took over leadership of the Regiment. Undeterred by the strong enemy fire from tanks, rocket launchers, artillery and aircraft, he repeatedly went to the hotspots of the fighting. From these points he inspired officers, NCOs and men to offer up their greatest possible resistance via his own exemplary behaviour. Even after being wounded by a shell splinter to the face he remained with the Regiment and maintained a firm grip over its command. His crisis-proof, exemplary attitude was of immeasurable value to the Brigade in the hours of its greatest test on the battlefield. He significantly contributed to the prevention of the intended enemy breakthrough against Reval.”

Dr. Daubert and the remnants of his Regiment defended a position near Bunkas, however since reinforcements came too late they were unable to prevent a Soviet breakthrough in their vicinity. Dr. Daubert and the remains of his Regiment (about 200 men) were encircled during the following night around the regimental command post. However, from positions around the edge of a gravel pit, Dr. Daubert and his men were able to defeat all Soviet attempts to crush them. After a new defensive line had been created about 1.5 km to their rear Dr. Daubert led his men in a breakout on the 22.02.1945. Along with the staff of the I./A.R. 126 they succeeded in breaking through an enemy assembly area and reaching friendly lines.”
