  • Page 15: The first signature with the stamp “II./Pz.Gren.Rgt.11” is most likely that of Oberleutnant Fritz Jacoby (RK, KIA on March 19, 1943)!

Hospital entries: In June 1940, he suffered a Nervenzusammenbruch (mental breakdown) and was discharged to the Ersatztruppen on June 28, 1940. In May 1941, he suffered a shrapnel wound (code: 31b) and was discharged on June 4, 1941. In January 1942, he was found “Gesund und Marschfähig k.v.” – k.v. = kriegsverwendungsfähig) and send back to the field units. However, on May 29, 1942, he was hospitalized again at Hauptverbandsplatz 2/60 in Kursk for a Nervenzusammenbruch. Almost a year later, on March 4, 1943, he was treated at Feldlazarett 602 (mot.) for a shrapnel wound (31b) and send to Kriegslazarett 2/615 and Reserve-Lazarett Brest am Bug, Teillazarett IV because he lost his left eye due shrapnel (Granatsplitter, Verlust linker Auges). He was discharged on March 31, 1943 and sent to the Panzergrenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon 10.

Raeder. Kapitänleutnant Heinz Birnbacher has distinguished himself as the commander of a Schnellbootsflottille during the fighting near Norway and the English coastline by leading his formation with tactical skill and boldness despite his youth. His example and daredevilry inspires both his captains and crews alike. During the Norwegian Operation he led his formation during the capture of Bergen and the battles in the fjords, sinking a Norwegian torpedo boat and scattering convoys of tankers and troop transports. Over the course of six out of seven sallies against the English fleet his Flottille sank 4 enemy destroyers under the most difficult of circumstances, one of which was sunk by his own command boat.”

Awarded for his successful leadership of Kleinkampfflottille 211 during the late-war period. This unit was equipped with small motor boats filled with explosives. Dubbed “Linsen”, they were effectively modern fireships. By the time Bastian was awarded the Knight’s Cross his unit had been credited with sinking 12 ships with 43000 GRT. This total included the destroyer “HMS Quorn” and the trawler “HMS Gairsay”.

“Knight’s Cross for Wachtmeister Gemünden – 21 tanks destroyed in 20 minutes: The Führer has awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Wachtmeister Gemünden, gun commander in a Flak regiment, at the recommendation of the supreme commander of the Luftwaffe, Reichsmarschall Göring. Wachtmeister Otto Gemünden, born on the 30.05.1914 in Oberingelheim, distinguished himself through outstanding bravery on the 30.09.1942 during the defense against a heavy enemy armoured attack launched against the lines north of Stalingrad. Through skillful tactical acumen, and while fully utilizing the firepower of his gun, he destroyed 21 enemy tanks in just 20 minutes with 35 rounds. 10 of these were of the heavy American type.”
