Original Belgian Congo tropical helmet (“Tropenhelm”) attributed to the Force Publique / colonial service, complete with original ABBL / FN-ZM style insignia and leather chinstrap. Classic white colonial pattern helmet with ventilated dome construction, retaining a beautiful untouched patina from tropical service use.
The helmet remains in honest used condition with visible age, staining and wear consistent with period field use in the Belgian Congo. The front badge displays the Belgian royal crown above the black-yellow-red cockade motif surrounded by laurel leaves. A highly decorative and increasingly difficult to find colonial-era piece.
A superb display item for collectors of Belgian colonial militaria, Force Publique equipment, Congo history or tropical headgear.

Historical Description
The Force Publique served as the military and police force of the Congo Free State and later the Belgian Congo from 1885 until Congolese independence in 1960. Colonial troops and Belgian personnel stationed in Central Africa commonly used tropical helmets such as this example for service in the harsh equatorial climate. Variants of the Wolseley-style tropical helmet became synonymous with Belgian colonial service during the first half of the 20th century.
The Force Publique participated in numerous colonial campaigns and later served during both World Wars, particularly in the East African campaigns of WWI. By the interwar and postwar period, these helmets had become iconic items of Belgian colonial military equipment.
An evocative relic from Belgium’s colonial presence in Central Africa and an excellent representative piece of Force Publique history.
