An original Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (DRK) Verwendungsbuch belonging to Schwesternhelferin Anna Krauthausen, complete with its original attached portrait photograph and extensive wartime service entries.
Issued in Munich on 28 August 1942, the booklet records her qualification in Krankenpflege (Nursing Care) and documents several years of uninterrupted wartime medical service within the German Red Cross.
The service record begins in April 1942, when Krauthausen commenced service as a helper at a military hospital. During the following years she served at various medical facilities, including:

Historical Description
The Verwendungsbuch served as the official service record for members of the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz engaged in voluntary wartime nursing. Every Schwesternhelferin carried this booklet throughout her service, where each transfer, medical examination, leave period, illness, vaccination and assignment was officially recorded.
Unlike ordinary identity documents, the Verwendungsbuch provides a detailed chronology of an individual’s wartime career. As a result, surviving examples with numerous entries are particularly sought after by collectors and researchers.
This example belonged to Anna Krauthausen, whose training in Krankenpflege qualified her for military nursing duties. Beginning in April 1942, she served in several military medical establishments and Reserve-Lazarette, with long periods spent in Munich and Jülich. The booklet records routine medical inspections, annual leave, hospital transfers, vaccinations against diphtheria, issuance of a gas mask, and treatment for illnesses including influenza and bronchitis.
Entries continue into March 1945, documenting service during the final phase of the Second World War, making this an excellent primary source illustrating the administration and daily life of DRK nursing personnel.
