Oberleutnant Werner Oberländer (16.12.1912 in Bankauermühle† 12.10.1996 Kaufbeuren) earned the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on July 10, 1942 as Leutnant in the 2. Staffel/ Kampfgeschwader 55 “Greif” and the Ritterkreuz des Eiseren Kreuzes on March 24, 1943 as Oberleutnant und Flugzeugführer in the 2. Staffel/ Kampfgeschwader 55 “Greif”.
Knight’s Cross: “Awarded in recognition of his total of 263 bomber sorties flown, during which he achieved his greatest operational success on the Eastern front. Here he distinguished himself, among other things, by scoring several direct hits on Rostov’s railway station (19.07.1942), placing a direct hit on an engine factory in Stalingrad (25.08.1942) and by striking against shipping on the Wolga.”
Provenance: This signature comes from one of the largest postwar signature collection I’ve ever commissioned. This collection was started by a Waffen-SS Veteran, Werner H., in the 1950’s until he passed away.
