Wehrmacht Nachrichtenhelferin Portrait – Tilsit, East Prussia

IN STOCK

Price revealed when Early Access opens.

An original wartime studio portrait photograph of a Wehrmacht Nachrichtenhelferin (Wehrmacht Signals Auxiliary Woman), showing a young woman in German military auxiliary uniform during the Second World War.

The portrait depicts her wearing a Schiffchen (garrison cap) with the German national eagle insignia, a uniform jacket, white shirt and dark tie. A circular Nachrichtenhelferinnen-Brosche (Signals Auxiliary Woman’s Brooch) is visible on her tie, identifying her association with the female communications auxiliaries of the German armed forces.

The reverse bears the photographic studio imprint „Foto-Atelier Groß, Tilsit, Hohe Str. 63“, identifying the studio in Tilsit, East Prussia (now Sovetsk, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia). This provides an interesting geographical connection to a former German city in East Prussia during the wartime period.

Historical background: The Nachrichtenhelferinnen des Heeres (German Army Signals Auxiliaries) were female auxiliary personnel employed in military communications during the Second World War. Their duties included telephone and teleprinter operations, message transmission and other communications-related work. Their service helped maintain the communications networks required by the German Army.

Original portrait photographs of these women are collectible examples of the often-overlooked history of female auxiliary personnel and their roles within the wartime military system.

Condition: Original black-and-white studio photograph with attractive portrait detail. The photograph shows age-related yellowing, spotting, creasing and general handling wear. The reverse retains the printed studio address and handwritten notation. Please examine the photographs for the exact condition. Postcardsize.
