In October 1940 he joined Infantry Regiment 422, with which he fought in Russia from June 1941. On June 22, 1941 he was commander of the 5th company. On April 1, 1942 he was promoted to active officer and captain, on August 7, 1942 he became commander of the II Battalion. On August 17, 1942, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross for his services as a company commander. In March 1944 he was seriously wounded and on April 13, 1944 he was awarded the Oak Leaves as a major for his services as commander of the II Battalion. After his recovery, on September 1, 1944, he took over the leadership of the “Greater Germany” guard battalion in Berlin. On October 1, 1944, this battalion was upgraded to a regiment and Hogrebe became its first commander. As a lieutenant colonel, he took part in the final battles for Berlin with the regiment.

Over 700 enemy dead were counted. 5 artillery pieces, 3 heavy anti-tank guns, 1 heavy AA gun, 8 anti-tank rifles, 22 MGs, numerous small arms and 30 horse-drawn wagons were also captured.”

Emil Berner – Flak-Regiment 18 (Afrikakorps)

Awarded for distinguishing himself as a Flak gunner throughout the North African campaign. During the battles of Sidi Rezeg and Bir el Hacheim (1941) he destroyed 16 enemy tanks. During the advances in the time period May-June 1942 (Tobruk—Marsa Matruk—El Alamein) he destroyed another 19 enemy tanks. He also destroyed about 200 vehicles as well as anti-tank gun batteries and MG nests. During the combat along the El Alamein front he prevented an armoured breakthrough, destroying 7 tanks at a range of 30-50 metres and shielding about 1000 prisoners from the Allies long enough for them to be taken away by German troops. He had destroyed 42 tanks altogether by the time he received the Knight’s Cross.

Hans Teusen – Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 2 (2.FJD) (Corinth, Greece)

Kompanie/ Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 2 of the 2. Fallschirmjäger-Division.
Awarded for his actions at the Corinth canal on the 26.04.1941. After he and his Zug were dropped south of the canal they stormed into action and quickly eliminated an anti-aircraft battery at the south end of the bridge. They were, however, unable to prevent the demolition of this bridge. With this Teusen and the rest of his Kompanie (led by Hauptmann Schirmer) began their attack into Corinth. Teusen, with the help of two captured self-propelled AA guns, pushed into the city. There he met with Schirmer again and pressed on towards Tolos, taking hostile positions and destroying their rearguard. Teusen was wounded at this stage of the battle but remained with his troops. As the battle continued to go in the Germans’ favour, Teusen sent an English speaking Feldwebel to persuade the British to surrender. With a little bit of bluffing this attempt was successful, and Teusen’s Zug accepted the surrender of 72 British officers and 1200 men. (Source: TracesofWar)

Schrijnen was hit by several shell splinters, but the four other crewman all became casualties. Under the weight of the Soviet attack the order was given to withdraw. Schrijnen however disobeyed the order and remained behind to cover his comrades. Despite being wounded, exhausted and vastly outnumbered he was still able to knock out 4 T-34s and 3 IS-2s before his gun was destroyed. Later, counterattacking German forces found Schrijnen unconscious on the battlefield. He would receive the Knight’s Cross for his actions this day as well as for prior successes as an anti-tank gunner.”
