Kompanie/ Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 2 of the 2. Fallschirmjäger-Division.

Awarded for his actions at the Corinth canal on the 26.04.1941. After he and his Zug were dropped south of the canal they stormed into action and quickly eliminated an anti-aircraft battery at the south end of the bridge. They were, however, unable to prevent the demolition of this bridge. With this Teusen and the rest of his Kompanie (led by Hauptmann Schirmer) began their attack into Corinth. Teusen, with the help of two captured self-propelled AA guns, pushed into the city. There he met with Schirmer again and pressed on towards Tolos, taking hostile positions and destroying their rearguard. Teusen was wounded at this stage of the battle but remained with his troops. As the battle continued to go in the Germans’ favour, Teusen sent an English speaking Feldwebel to persuade the British to surrender. With a little bit of bluffing this attempt was successful, and Teusen’s Zug accepted the surrender of 72 British officers and 1200 men. (Source: TracesofWar)

Hauptmann Abele was a Bataillon commander in the 44. Grenadier-Division “Hoch und Deutschmeister” during its battles in Italy in early 1944. On the 27.01.1944 the Bataillon was ordered to close a gap in the German lines near Belmonte (specifically between the Colle Abate and Monte Castellone, in the Terelle Valley) and thereby protect the vital supply line known as the “Neumann-Weg”. The Bataillon’s promised support did not arrive, and so Abele and his men were alone in this fight. In the fighting which ensued they defended against Allied troops from Morocco. The fighting degenerated into close combat, wherein the men of Abele’s Bataillon were reduced to throwing stones when their grenades ran out. Nevertheless, with the help of mountain gun that prevented timely reinforcement of the French attack, the Bataillon was able to prevent an entire French regiment from capturing the Colle Abate. By the time they were relieved by the Pz.Gren.Rgt. 200 (90. Pz.Gren.Div.), Abele’s Bataillon was down to 36 men. Yet the achievements of this unit did not go unnoticed, and Abele would receive the Knight’s Cross as well as a promotion.

Original Postwar Signature on a Postwar Photo of Karl Nicolussi-Leck. SS-Hauptsturmführer Karl Nicolussi-Leck earned the Ritterkreuz on April 9, 1944 as SS-Obersturmführer und Chef of the 8. Kompanie/ SS-Panzer-Regiment 5 of the 5. SS-Panzer-Division “Wiking”.

Karl Nicolussi-Leck was the commander of a Panther company in the 5. SS-Panzer-Division “Wiking” during its efforts to relieve the trapped garrison at Kovel in March 1944. On the 27th of that month, with the German relief efforts still in progress, Nicolussi-Leck received an order to halt all offensive actions. By this point he was in radio conduct with the garrison, and felt that its relief was of the utmost importance. He thus told his radio operator to send a reply stating that he (Nicolussi-Leck) could not be found, and with that continued the push to the town. Three days later, following difficult fighting, he was able to reach the trapped garrison with seven tanks on the early morning of the 30th. By doing so he was able to substantially reinforce the garrison’s defences, and he remained with them until Kovel was finally relieved for good. His recommendation also says that he destroyed 17 tanks in the process, although it is possible this number is for the whole company. Either way, Nicolussi-Leck’s actions were judged to be worthy of the Knight’s Cross, and he received this award shortly afterwards. (Source: Traces of War)
