Awarded the Knight’s Cross for the sinking of 17 ships with a total of 95429 GRT. This total included the US passenger freighter “Santa Rita”, and as the ship was being blown up Emmermann and his crew were able to capture a map showing the locations of the mine barriers guarding Cape Town. Another notable success amongst this total was the British troop transport “Orcades” (23456 GRT), which was sunk on the 10.10.1942.

Leutnant der Reserve Peters received the Knight’s Cross for actions in early January 1944, where his company fought successfully in the defensive battles around Kalinkowitschi and played a vital role in defending Hill 147. The most important engagement took place on the morning of 6 January, when Peters had to defend the hill with 4 tanks against a large Soviet armoured attack. Peter’s men were able to catch the Soviets off-guard during their approach and destroyed 14 tanks without loss (in fact, only one Soviet tank even returned fire), forcing the rest to retreat.

Awarded for distinguishing himself as a Flak gunner throughout the North African campaign. During the battles of Sidi Rezeg and Bir el Hacheim (1941) he destroyed 16 enemy tanks. During the advances in the time period May-June 1942 (Tobruk—Marsa Matruk—El Alamein) he destroyed another 19 enemy tanks. He also destroyed about 200 vehicles as well as anti-tank gun batteries and MG nests. During the combat along the El Alamein front he prevented an armoured breakthrough, destroying 7 tanks at a range of 30-50 metres and shielding about 1000 prisoners from the Allies long enough for them to be taken away by German troops. He had destroyed 42 tanks altogether by the time he received the Knight’s Cross.

Karl-Heinrich Bodenschatz was a German general who was the adjutant to Manfred von Richthofen in World War I and the liaison officer between Hermann Göring and Adolf Hitler in World War II. The photo is signed on the reverse, the signature seen on the front is in the print and not hand signed. During World War II he was the liaison officer between Hitler’s headquarters and the Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe until he was seriously injured in 1944 by the 20 July plot bomb at the Wolf’s Lair headquarters in Rastenburg, East Prussia. Ritterkreuz: “Following heavy retreat battles, on the night of the 25./26.07.1944 the Tannenberg Line between Orphanage Hill and the Gulf of Finland was occupied by the Regiment 49 ‘De Ruyter’. The Regiment had the mission of holding this line against all enemy attacks. The enemy commenced an immediate assault with a much greater number of divisions, which were aided by strong tank, artillery and air support. In a sacrificial battle, the Regiment succeeded in defeating all enemy attacks with extremely high losses for the foe. In this major struggle the commander of the Regiment, SS-Obersturmbannführer Collani, fell in battle. In this moment of crisis his adjutant, SS-Hauptsturmführer Ertel, took over leadership of the Regiment. Undeterred by the strong enemy fire from tanks, rocket launchers, artillery and aircraft, he repeatedly went to the hotspots of the fighting. From these points he inspired officers, NCOs and men to offer up their greatest possible resistance via his own exemplary behaviour. Even after being wounded by a shell splinter to the face he remained with the Regiment and maintained a firm grip over its command. His crisis-proof, exemplary attitude was of immeasurable value to the Brigade in the hours of its greatest test on the battlefield. He significantly contributed to the prevention of the intended enemy breakthrough against Reval.”

“Oberstleutnant Audorff has already served as an outstanding troop leader in the western campaign. In this capacity he distinguished himself in such a way that he was assigned the post of regimental commander while only a Major. Assigned the task of organizing the formation of Grenadier-Regiment 754 in November 1942, he was able to forge this unit into an effective instrument of war within a very short time. As such it was able to be employed with great success on the Tunisian front as early as December of the same year. On the 25.04.1943 the English launched an offensive near Medjez el Bab that had the ultimate aim of breaking through to Tunis. On this day Oberstleutnant Audorff personally directed his defense from the foremost line, and he managed to pull off a successful resistance against an English infantry division reinforced by a tank brigade. The main line of defense therefore remained completely in our hands by the evening of this day. Throughout this time he personally intervened everywhere despite strong enemy artillery and airstrikes. He conducted all the necessary counterthrusts/counterattacks and was the soul of the defensive will. His Regiment was accordingly named in the OKW-Bericht for having the lion’s share of this defensive success. However the prevention of an enemy breakthrough to Tunis on this day is ultimately the personal achievement of Oberstleutnant Audorff, commander of the Grenadier-Regiment 754. Kurt Bühlingen served with the Luftwaffe from 1936 until early 1945. At first he joined the Luftwaffe as a mechanic, but underwent flying training in 1938 and 1939. He was placed with Jagdgeschwader 2 in July 1940 as pilot with the rank of Unteroffizier. In September 1940 he scored his first enemy kill. In December 1942 he claimed his 40th victory while serving with II. / Jagdgeschwader 2 in Tunisia, North Africa. In March 1943 he returned to Europe. A year later he had scored 96 kills and commanded II. / Jagdgeschwader 2 with the rank of Major. Later he led the Jagdgeschwader 2 during fighting on the Eastern Front. As Kommodore of Jagdgeschwader 2, due to an engine failure, he was forced to land in enemy territory in early 1945 and was taken POW by the Soviets. He stayed in imprisonment until 1950.
